HighLight at night

It’s going to be wild at HighLight: Carnival of Lights 2018!

For four nights over Labour Weekend 19-22 October, HighLight returns to transform Riddiford Garden into a spectacular carnival of lights for all ages.

This year, you’ll journey below the waves, across land and sky, experience the power of the elements, meet creepy-crawly characters, and discover a mythical forest.

Just like last year there’ll be live entertainment, brilliant light installations, fireworks, interactive activities and more, all for free. The site is larger, taking advantage of the recent redevelopment of the Civic Precinct, including the new Lower Hutt Events Centre.

Across this larger site you’ll find improved pathlighting, linking incredible light artworks from international and local artists and performers. We’ve brought some of the best of Vivid Sydney to our shores for the first time, as well as custom, never-before-seen creations.

We’re also proud to support our charity partner this year, Te Omanga Hospice. Along with our commercial partners and supporters, we’ll be raising money for this much-loved organisation as they fundraise for their new hospice after their old building was discovered to be earthquake prone. So make sure you bring a gold coin donation for this worthy cause!

You can join in the fun a bit earlier with HighLight Nights, a series of pre-carnival events across the valley. Returning from last year:

  • Ara mai night walk up the Te Whiti Riser, the native bush illuminated as you go
  • Glowga, a glow-in-the-dark yoga session
  • Night Picnic at Percy’s, a fun family picnic in the beautiful Percy Scenic Reserve
  • Glow Wild Nights, youth parties in Taita and Wainuiomata

New for 2018 is Energise the Night, a glowing party run through the Lower Hutt CBD. Bring your friends and walk, dance or run your way around a fiesta of sound and light. Performers, motivators and music will keep you entertained whatever distance you choose.  Enjoy the afterparty with food and drinks in the CBD.

You can follow the excitement as we get ready by visiting highlight.org.nz, liking our Facebook page, or following our new Instagram account. We’ll be giving you sneak peeks at what’s coming, as well as important event information.
