The Naenae piano

Have you seen the Naenae piano? Have you played the Naenae piano? What a story this piano has!

The story starts with our Lower Hutt Mayor, Ray Wallace being gifted two pianos that were not needed from Epuni School. Mayor Wallace then gifted these pianos to The About Space Programme* in Lower Hutt to help revitalise our communities.

One of these pianos is being used in the Art on High site, High Street, Lower Hutt and the other one found its way to Hillary Court, Naenae.

The Naenae piano lives at Forward in Faith Church in Hillary Court and Sandra, Secretary for the Church, brings the piano out for people to enjoy playing it and listening to our talented local’s skills.

The newest installment in our piano story involves Michaela Miller, a Naenae artist. You will find Michaela and the piano at the Naenae Market in Hillary Court on Saturdays. Michaela is breathing new life into our Naenae piano by giving it a well-deserved makeover; make sure you visit her at the market this weekend.

* About Space Programme is a Hutt City Council initiative designed to help revitalise the CBD and now Naenae, by filling empty storefronts with creative projects, pop-up businesses and community focused activities. The projects attract people to the CBD, then which they can enjoy the local eateries and shopping experiences. It highlights how an activated space can become a permanent commercial tenancy.
