Applications for Innovative Young Minds 2021 open this Sunday

Innovative Young Minds (IYM) is again being held in 2021 and applications open on Sunday 1 November.

Founded by Hutt City Council and Rotary Hutt City, IYM offers young women in years 11 and 12 the opportunity to learn about the wide range of research and career opportunities available in STEMM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics and high-tech manufacturing).

IYM is excited to announce two inspiring programmes for 2021 for young women from the Greater Wellington Region. IYM Online will take place in the first week of the April school holidays over five half-day sessions and IYM Residential is a six-day residential programme based at Silverstream Retreat in Lower Hutt during the first week of the July school holidays. Young women from the Greater Wellington Region are eligible to apply for either IYM Online or IYM Residential depending on their preference.

On both programmes, participants will be exposed to eye-opening and inspiring science and technology content in the most interactive way possible through:

  • Tours of laboratories and other spaces in universities, Crown Research Institutes and businesses.
  • Interactive sessions where researchers and innovators showcase their research and work.
  • Inspiring career panels led by women working in STEMM.
  • Hands-on science and technology activities.
  • Team-building and networking sessions.
  • An Innovation Challenge where participants work in teams led by industry expert mentors.

IYM’s programmes are only open to young women, because women are underrepresented in the STEMM sector. IYM is looking for students who show potential in STEMM subjects, not necessarily those who have performed at the top of their class in the past. IYM wants to inspire students that have not had exposure to STEMM subjects previously or who need to build their confidence to pursue these subjects further.

IYM provides an unrivalled opportunity for Lower Hutt-based business and organisations to showcase their work and research to potential employees and to demonstrate the exciting opportunities available in their fields. To find out more about IYM and how to be involved, visit www.iym.org.nz.
