Innovative Young Minds (IYM) offers young women in years 11 and 12 an exciting opportunity to learn about the wide range of research and career opportunities available in STEMM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics and high-tech manufacturing). IYM seeks to encourage diversity in New Zealand’s science and technology industry, by inspiring a new generation of innovators and industry leaders.
IYM’s programmes are only open to young women, because females are underrepresented in the STEMM sector. IYM is looking for students who show an interest and potential in STEMM subjects, not just those at the top of their class. Their aim is to inspire students who have had little exposure to STEMM subjects or who need to build their confidence to pursue these subjects further.
This year, IYM’s traditional one-week residential programme was cancelled due to COVID-19. However, IYM quickly adapted and ran a successful IYM Online 2020 programme with 98 participants. In 2021, IYM plans to deliver an online programme and a residential programme – making it adaptable and accessible in a constantly changing environment.
Both IYM programmes will feature:
- Tours of laboratories and other spaces in universities, Crown Research Institutes and businesses.
- Interactive sessions where researchers and innovators showcase their research and work.
- Inspiring careers sessions led by women working in STEMM.
- Hands-on science and technology activities.
- Team-building and networking sessions.
- An Innovation Challenge where participants work in teams led by industry expert mentors.
Young women from the Greater Wellington Region can apply for either IYM Online or IYM Residential, depending on their preference. IYM Online will take place in the first week of the April school holidays, over five half-day sessions. IYM Residential is a six-day residential programme based at Silverstream Retreat in Lower Hutt during the first week of the July school holidays.
IYM provides an unrivalled opportunity for Lower Hutt-based business and organisations to showcase their work and research to potential employees and to demonstrate the exciting opportunities available in their fields.
