We’re currently engaging with the community on the future of the Petone Library and Heritage Centre, and future options for the current site of the Naenae Library once it’s relocated to the new Community Hub.
Petone Library and Heritage Centre
The current Petone Library and Heritage Centre building needs repairs and Hutt City Council’s Annual Plan is proposing $1.5m be spent on this in 2021-2022. Meanwhile, we’re keen to take this opportunity to step back and consider the bigger picture. We want to make sure the facility meets the current and future needs of the Petone community.
We’re looking at several options which range from refurbishing the existing building, to replacing it with a multi-purpose facility which would meet the existing needs, and additionally could offer more community spaces and services. We’re also considering options for housing as part of the facility, given the current shortage of housing in our city, and a redeveloped Civic area providing a better connection to Jackson Street. You’ll see we’re also looking at housing as an option for the redevelopment of the Naenae Library site, once that’s relocated to the new Community Hub, for the same reason – an opportunity to provide much-needed safe and warm homes for current and future residents of Lower Hutt.
You can have your say here or visit the display at the Petone Library from March 20 and fill out a survey.
Naenae Library site
We’re also looking at options for the site of the Naenae Library once it’s integrated with the Community Hub. It needs to be something that’ll both revitalise Hillary Court and the surrounding area, build on our work to date and meet the wider needs of the community. Housing is one option we’ve been considering, given the current shortage. This could be a great opportunity to make more high quality, safe, warm and dry housing available. We’re keen to hear your thoughts.
