Innovative Young Minds goes online

Innovative Young Minds (IYM), an initiative between Hutt City Council and Rotary Hutt City to empower young women in STEMM subjects, is going online!

Usually held in the July school holidays as a residential programme in Lower Hutt, IYM exposes 80 Year 11 and 12 young women to the myriad of research and career opportunities available in STEMM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics and high-tech manufacturing).

The programme is designed to be as engaging and hands-on as possible. It also enables participants to develop friendships with other like-minded young women and become part of a supportive IYM community.

As a residential programme is not a viable option in 2020 due to Covid-19, IYM is embracing technology and creating a new online programme for its participants. IYM Programme Manager, Sue Avison says:

IYM’s goal is to inspire our young women to think innovatively, so it is only right that we do the same!”

The programme will be free and open to all the young women who applied for the July 2020 residential programme. Participants will get to experience to following:

  • Virtual tours of laboratories and other spaces in universities, crown institutes and businesses.
  • Interactive sessions in which researchers and innovators showcase their research and work.
  • An interactive panel where women in the STEMM sector discuss their careers and experiences and answer questions.
  • Creative technology sessions using digital technology platforms.
  • Facilitation sessions and networking sessions led by industry experts and IYM alumnae.
  • An Innovation Challenge where participants work in teams to find a creative solution to a STEMM challenge.

Lucy McCrone, IYM Participant from 2019, says:

IYM made me consider futures that had never even crossed my mind before by giving me opportunities that I would never get at school. And being alongside other girls with similar interests allowed us to help and encourage each other to explore our interests and turn them into possible careers.”
