Libraries support community food banks in time for Christmas

The October ‘Food for fines’ promotion at Hutt City Libraries has been declared a resounding success.

Over four thousand food items were donated to local foodbanks, brought in by Library customers who were excited to have their fines waived, and start using their library cards for borrowing again.

The ‘Food for fines’ promotion allowed Hutt City Libraries customers to wipe $5.00 of library fines for every food item donated. As with previous years Libraries have run the promotion, the support from the community has been massive.

Libraries Divisional Manager Kat Cuttriss said “with the help of the community we have donated boxes and boxes of food to our local foodbanks in time for Christmas, when many families particularly need this service.”

About half of items donated were given to the Lower Hutt Foodbank. Petone, Taita, Stokes Valley and Wainuiomata Libraries also donated to local foodbanks in their communities.

Check the libraries website for other promotions over summer.
