This year, Christmas in Naenae is going to be celebrated on the 14th December in Hillary Court. A number of community groups coming together to host these events, and it promises to be a great day.
From 11am-2pm, the day will start with the Naenae Village Christmas Market. From stalls filled with goodies and fresh fruit and vegetables to your favourite man in red and white paying a visit along with his elves, it’s guaranteed to be a world of festive fun for your tamariki to enjoy. Run by Team Naenae Trust, the market has been growing throughout the year to become a regular Saturday event for the community.
Team Naenae Trust’s Lyn Bareta says:
“Our kaupapa for the Christmas market is based on the concept of whanaungatanga – connecting the community through shared experiences. Our wish is for the Christmas Market to provide the community with an opportunity to engage in and share the festive spirit by supporting our stallholders and local retailers, while enjoying free entertainment and many fun filled family activities provided throughout the day.”
From 4:30pm-7pm, the Oasis Church in Naenae is hosting a Christmas in the Court event – the first of four festivals that the community is planning for Naenae. These festivals are based around seasons of the year, with the next being in March called Naenae Oranga – valuing well-being, diversity, sustenance, liveliness, positive relationships and kindness.
Christmas in the Court is a free family variety show, based on the idea of the Christmas in the Park concept. This is a wonderful opportunity for the Naenae community to come together and share the Christmas spirit by enjoying food, entertainment and even a sing-along with each other.
Daryl Green says:
“it’s time for unity to be put back into our community. Let’s celebrate a WIN to end 2019. Naenae’s best days are not behind us, they are ahead of us.”
To end the day of celebrations, the community can relax with a movie under the stars. After all, Hillary Court was once home to the Regent Cinema. Emily Innes from the Naenae Community Cinema will be putting on an outdoor movie screening of the Grinch, which will start at 8.45pm in Hillary Court.
There will be a giant screen on the side of the former Post Office building for this special and free screening – bring your family and friends, cushions and blankets and don’t forget your spare cash for movie snacks!
