Help protect our wildlife

The sun has returned, hooray! In light of this we would like to remind you where, on our Lower Hutt beaches, you can and cannot exercise your dog. Each beach has well marked signs with all the information you require, so please ensure you read them carefully before allowing your dog on the beach.

These rules are in place to protect our precious wildlife, especially our little blue penguin (kororā). Dogs are likely the greatest threat to kororā as their strong smell is extremely enticing and they aren’t well adapted to make a quick getaway!

Abiding by the dog exercise rules will ensure we are doing our best to protect Lower Hutt’s resident wildlife.

  • Dogs are allowed before 9am and after 8pm (during daylight savings): Point Howard, Sorrento Bay, Lowry Bay, York Bay, Mahina Bay, Rona Bay and Robinson Bay.
  • Days Bay Beach. Apart from directly opposite Wellesley College this beach is now on-leash only, before 9am and after 8pm.
  • Petone Beach from Hikoikoi Reserve to Petone Wharf, before 9am and after 8pm (during daylight savings). West of Petone Wharf is a ‘Dog Exercise Area’
