In Lower Hutt, we’re spoilt for choice when it comes to easy rides close to home.
Petone Foreshore, Hutt River Trail, Wainuiomata’s Waiu Park, Eastbourne’s Promenade and Pencarrow Coast Road all offer safe, family-friendly routes. You can even plan a trip that ends with a barbecue lunch or dinner, using our free barbecues at Avalon Park, Belmont Domain, Petone Foreshore, Riddiford Garden, and C L Bishop Park.
For something different you can try frisbee golf at Hikoikoi Reserve (BYO frisbees), or visit the new playground at Avalon Park – there’s even a beginners bike circuit, complete with road signs, different types of intersections, and a railway level crossing.
Once you’ve got the family biking bug, it’s easy to carry on exploring. The new Find Your Wild website has been created to make Wellington’s trails easy to navigate. You’ll find hundreds of opportunities for walking and biking ranging from easy to adventurous. Launched at the beginning of December it is still a work in progress, with many of the small local trails to be added in the coming months.
For family biking you don’t need heaps of equipment, although it is a good idea to be prepared for a tyre puncture or an accident. Pop a tyre puncture kit, a few plasters, some tissues and a water bottle in your backpack just in case.
For more serious rides, there are useful tips available on the Find Your Wild website.
