Cricket keen Mayor rewards junior players with pool passes

Being recognised as Player of the Day is often a highlight for junior sports players. Taita Cricket Club’s junior team recently had the added bonus of having their Go the H2O Player of the Day certificates presented by Lower Hutt Mayor Campbell Barry.

Known as a keen cricketer, Mayor Barry was delighted to recognise the efforts of the players with the certificates that come with a free pool pass to any Council pool in not just Lower Hutt but Upper Hutt, Wellington, Porirua, Kāpiti Coast and Horowhenua.

Mayor Barry says:

Most people play sport because it is a fun way to be active. The Go the H2O Player of the Day certificates reward our sporting juniors with a pool pass that provides another free,  fun way to be active. It has the added benefit of breaking the link between fast food sponsorship and junior sport.”

David Gillispie, President of Taita Cricket Club backs the initiative. As a club they are always working to share their love of cricket with as many young players as they can.

Getting kids into cricket builds skills, team work and is great fun. Being able to provide pool passes as rewards reinforces all the positives of being involved in sports.”

To be eligible for the Player of the Day certificates with pool passes, sports clubs need to demonstrate their commitment to promoting water as the drink of choice for their juniors.

Hayley Buchan, Manager of Healthy Families Hutt Valley, the organisation that leads the pool pass initiative says:

Sports clubs that promote water and instead of sugary drinks and fast food helps make healthy choices more normal for our children. The pool passes are a great way for Councils to support clubs to provide positive healthy environments for their junior players. ”

Clubs can apply for the Player of the Day certificates for upcoming winter sports codes through the Healthy Families Hutt Valley website.
