Eco Design Tips: Heating your home

It’s autumn, and the weather is cool enough for us to think of heating our houses again.

Probably time to go into the garage, take out that old LPG gas heater… and take it to the landfill for recycling. Then you can replace it with something better. Not all heaters perform the same, but there is a heater that will suit your needs and most budgets.

LPG heaters are inefficient, add moisture and toxic gases into the house, deplete the oxygen levels, and cost more to use than other types of heaters. They are also banned in some countries.

If you need heating and are unable to get a heat-pump, or other fixed and efficient heater, then you should get a plug-in electric heater.

Electric heating is generally of similar efficiency, but there are significant differences in how well they will heat a space. They have different ways of delivering the heat, and varying levels of control of temperature, all of which affect the final running costs.

Check out the video above for more details on the various options for portable electric heaters.
