Build & Play trailer parked up

Encouraging creative play in schools

An innovative and creative programme, facilitated by Active in the Hutt, offers primary school children the chance to embrace creative play with a trailer load of tools including saws, hammers, hand drills, timber, PVC pipes, tennis balls, and recycled items.

The Build & Play with CK & Co Realty programme is for Lower Hutt primary schools and is designed to grow opportunities for free, undirected children’s play.

Over the last 18 months, 3,335 students used the trailer 12,158 times and used 30.5 kg nails, 3,250 screws, 500 hinges, 284 drawer knobs, and 300m of rope. To date, 8,612 students have used the trailer 27,618 times.

Launched in 2018 as a result of ‘Play in the Hutt’ — a joint project by Hutt City Council, Healthy Families Hutt Valley and Sport NZ which advocates the importance of play and works to increase access and opportunities for play in our communities  the Build & Play programme is a free service that any primary school in the city can use.

The scheme — which is kindly sponsored by Hutt City realtors CK & Co. — ensures each school receives a risk assessment and programme training, along with recommendations on running the programme optimally to ensure safe play and the best results.

Following the success of the scheme, Active in the Hutt has also launched an exciting ‘Build & Play 2.0’ pilot, which comprises a kit of tools that can be transported in a van to schools who do not have the space for the trailer, or have capacity to source their own materials.

For more information, or to book either the trailer or van for your primary school, visit Play in the Hutt.
