The local cycling community have joined forces with Hutt City Council and Upper Hutt City Council to bring you a second annual #BiketheHutt festival. There will be cycling events from Petone to the Akatawara Forest from 25 Feb to 14 Mar 2021.
This 17 day festival features road and trail rides plus open days – a wide variety for everyone to join – for avid cyclists, bike lovers, trail explorers, and seasoned racers to beginners.
Wainuiomata Trail Project President Dirk Skagen says that the Hutt Valley has it’s own distinct riding destination.
“Cycling in the Hutt Valley is different from anywhere else in Wellington. It’s a little more wild and this #BiketheHutt festival is an exciting opportunity for us to share our story.
“You head deep into the Akatarawa or Mohaka Valley and it makes you feel so small compared to the jungle or towering barely touched forest.
“We’re joining other groups to host an open day as part of the festival and I’m looking forward to seeing people take part in events across 17 days.
“Those new to riding can find something for them and join a great bunch of people no matter their level of adventure.”
There are competitive options for riders of all levels of fitness at the Wellington Masters Road Race around Whitemans Valley, the Karapoti Classic which is the longest running mountain biking event in the Southern Hemisphere and the King and Queen of the Moutains Challenge returns.
For those after a more social experience, try Picnic by Bike: Frocks and Finery, a guided tour of the Hutt River or the Big Bike Film Night at the Lighthouse Cinema in Petone.
To celebrate this event, from 1st to 20th February there is a photo competition running. Share your Hutt Valley biking adventure on social media using #bikethehutt and you enter the draw to win a brand new kids bike. Follow the #BiketheHutt adventure and find out more at bikethehutt.nz.
